Branded materials for communication

    One way to communicate messages to the community on creating a safe learning environment is by having them on different materials. The branded bracelets, bottles, pens, bandanas, T-shirts and stickers all support information sharing in and out of the college. This is one of the strategies of reaching members of the institution to encourage behavior change so as to create a safe environment for us all. Do you think this strategy has any impact?  How else can we send messages to our community members?

There is No small GBV

  During the dissemination of the end-line survey on GBV by the MUST team, information from participants indicated that there is still some form of GBV in the institutions. It was noted that amongst us, there are actions, gestures, sayings that we perform casually but which make others feel uncomfortable. Some of the actions named include things like, ·          winking to someone you are not close to, ·          standing/bending over someone of the opposite sex, too close for comfort, ·     P atting someone especially in areas that they don’t feel comfortable about, like the chest, bum, wrist, waist. ·          Calling someone these common sexual names like sweetie, “kikwano” and others This calls for reflecting before we act around some people in our community. Capacity building

  Engaging the HR in capacity building activities like CPDs, benchmarking visits helps them to acquire knowledge on how to implement activities to foster gender mainstreaming. The coach helps participants to share experiences, identify gaps and propose strategies to bridge them. It is necessary for members of institutions to engage in the trainings and thereafter cascade to the whole institution to have the desired impact. As a team, in what areas under gender mainstreaming do we need support to be able to implement it as expected?

Sex disaggregated data

Disaggregation of data is the breakdown of gathered information into smaller units to gain deeper understanding of a situation or clarify underlying trends. Collection of sex disaggregated data of the college staff members helps to inform gender analysis, gender transformative approaches and the developing of programs and policies. This also helps to identify inequalities and to promote effective policy making and inform any actions that the college plans. Looking at the data, members in the college can propose ways of handling structures, resources and infrastructure. How else can this data be put to use?

Policy Documents

We have developed documents to guide in gender mainstreaming in the college community. The Gender GBV policy is to articulate guidelines on non-discriminatory prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV ). The Gender equality guidelines will support gender equality in National Teachers’ College Kaliro community .

  We have been able to engage in a number of activities including; training bystanders and referrals; implementing talking compounds; procurement of T shirts, bracelets, pens and stickers; conducting intellectuals dialogues; induction training on GBV by expert resource persons; display of infographic GBV messages on noticeboards, over the past implementation period.

A number of strategies are in place to create awareness, management, give hope to survivors and share solutions with various stakeholders. We shall have a safe learning environment, if everyone in the community joins in to fight GBV.
